Backdrop and Drupal

Wed, 11/05/2025 - 8:14pm by caliganblue

I first picked up Drupal at version 4.7. It's been a while.

And it's changed. A lot.

I miss it. I spend my days working in WordPress, for the most part. It's okay. I have some pretty serious philosophical differences with the way WP is structured (The Loop is not my friend), but it's okay.

But I miss Drupal. Or to be precise, I miss the Drupal that existed at v7, when I was still actively advocating it to everyone with enthusiasm and joy.

These days, it's hard to even open one of my Drupal sites to work on. I'm not going to argue that D8+ has modernized its codebase, because certainly it has. Certainly a lot of nice features have been added. I value the enthusiastic, diverse, human-centric culture they're preserving.

But... it's not my Drupal.

Backdrop is a D7 fork, and it looks like it has a pretty good module collection. So, for the forgotten joy of it, Caligan Blue is on Backdrop. I hope very much that it turns out to be as good as I'm remembering.
